A NEW £5 million state-of-the-art care home and day care facility is planned for Kirkcaldy.

Fife Council wants to build the 60-bed, two-storey facility in Ostler’s Way to replace the two care homes it currently operates in the town.

It is hoped the savings generated by combining Appin House and Raith Gates care homes will help pay for the investment.

A full report on the plans will be considered by the Council’s executive committee next week.

Replaced

Councillor Linda Erskine, executive member for finance, said: “All our current 10 care homes will eventually need replaced, but our approach is to start with those in the worst condition.

“By combining the two homes into one, officers have been able to work up a financial model that will allow us to build a new state-of-the-art replacement care home in Kirkcaldy and also offer day care and wider facilities for older people.

“We have also asked officials to examine the options for building housing for older people.

Care village

“We hope to bring forward further detail of this in the near future, but our objective would be to achieve a care village with a care home and associated facilities at its centre.”

Alex Rowley, Fife Council leader, met with staff and trade unions at Raith Gates Home in Kirkcaldy this week and said: “Officers have done a good job in bringing this paper forward for the Executive’s consideration.

‘‘I hope committee members will agree this model will allow the Council to replace our existing care homes, retain ownership and management of them and, in doing so, celebrate their high standards and quality of care provision.”

Debbie Thompson, joint trade unions secretary, added: “I believe this proposal to build new homes will be welcomed by staff who are committed to the people they care for.”
