A UNIQUE alcohol awareness programme is to be introduced in Levenmouth.

Aimed at those who may be sufferring alcohol abuse issues, but are not considered to be a criminal threat to the area, the Alcohol Diversion from Prosecution (ADFP) initiative is a joint scheme between the Procurator Fiscal service, ADAPT, the criminal justice social work services and Levenmouth police.

The aim is to address alcohol consumption and its effects on the community in relation to low-level anti-social behaviour issues and similar offences.

Announcing details of it to councillors of the Levenmouth area committee when they met at Buckhaven Community Centre, Levenmouth’s chief inspector, Graeme Kinmond, said: “This is a six-week course which is intended to stop a person who may have alcohol related issues from becoming an offender in the criminal system or even a victim themselves.”

The procurator fiscal will recommend potential individuals for the scheme based on information from the police and other bodies.

Attendance to the course for those who are placed on it is mandatory and regular and known criminals will not be referred.

Should the offender fail to complete the course then they will be referred back to the Procurator Fiscal for prosection on the original offence.
