New lease of life for Kirkcaldy church

one of Kirkcaldy’s most imposing former churches is to remain a place of worship, after being sold last week.
The old St Andrew’s church, the huge red sandstone building on the town’s Victoria Road has been bought by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, an Evangelical church which is relocating from Glenrothes to Kirkcaldy.
And Pastor Joseph, the Nigerian-born minister in charge of the growing congregation, is hopeful that the renovation work being carried out to allow the church to re-open will soon be complete and is extending a warm welcome to new members.
Expressing his delight that the church now has a new home of its own, he said he was looking forward to making new acquaintances and building up his congregation in Kirkcaldy.
“I first came to Scotland from Nigeria in 2006 to set up the church in Glenrothes and we have been renting rooms at the Whitehouse Community Hall in Napier Road since then.
“I live in Glenrothes with my wife and two children and we love it here in Fife.
“The Redeemed Christian Church of God started up around 60 years ago in Nigeria and since then has spread worldwide, with its UK headquarters in London and its Scottish headquarters in Aberdeen.
Excited
“We already have three branches in Fife – one in St Andrews, Dunfermline and the Glenrothes one which is moving to Kirkcaldy.
“We are very excited about having our own church building in Kirkcaldy and it is good that the old church building which has been a church here for 110 years is going to remain a place of worship.
“We were given the keys of the building on Saturday and we are going to be doing some repair and renovation work in the coming weeks to make sure everything is in shape for us moving in.
“We have a technician coming out to check the organ this week to see if it is still in working order, and in the meantime we will be holding our services in one of the halls within the building.”
The first will take place on Sunday from 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and is open to anyone interested in finding out more about the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
It also holds a monthly praise night on the second Saturday of each month, with the next scheduled for March.
A spokesman for Kirkcaldy Presbytery said: “We are really pleased that the building will continue to be a church and we wish them all the best as they establish themselves in Kirkcaldy.”
