New network of Fife cycle paths opened

A NETWORK of cycle paths throughout north Fife has been officially opened by local MSP Rod Campbell.

The paths were created as part of a £103,000 project carried out by North Howe Transition Toun, a not-for-profit company operating in the north of the Howe of Fife for the benefit of the community.

They cover a total of two-and-a-half kilometres and provide links for routes from Letham to Cupar and Collessie to Ladybank.

Funded by Leader Fife, Fife Environment Trust and the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund, the project got under way two years ago and has been managed by eco-consultant Crispin Hayes.

Recently it was highly commended at the Scottish Transport Awards.

In addition to the paths - which are suitable for walkers and cyclists of all abilities - five secure bicycle parks have been created where cyclists can leave their bikes and continue their onward journey by bus or car share.

Mr Campbell joined dozens of people from all over north east Fife for Sunday’s grand opening, which took place in Letham Village Hall.

Among the visitors were a group from Sustainable Cupar, who cycled to Letham to join in the celebrations.

RECOGNISED

Now the North Howe Transition Toun group are looking forward to developing a new phase of the project.

Crispin Hayes said: “The last year has been a great start for a paths at the north of the Howe.

“This has been recognised nationally at the Scottish Transport Awards just last month.

“But we know more paths need to be built for a good network to be realised. NHTT will continue to work on this for the benefit of the community.”
