New principal takes up reins at Adam Smith College

ADAM Smith College’s new interim principal took up his new role this week – and senior managers are confident he has the ability to steer the college through its present difficulties.

Martin McGuire was appointed in the wake of the suspension of Ian Harrington following concerns over the handling of European-funded projects.

Mr McGuire only officially started on Monday, but met many of the staff during visits to the college last week.

He also met representatives of the European Structural Fund Division and the Scottish Funding Council, and Scottish Government internal auditors, who are all involved in investigations at Adam Smith.

Mr McGuire has moved from Cumbernauld College, where he was employed for 17 years, initially as a senior lecturer in electronics. He went on to hold various management posts before being appointed principal and chief executive in May 2008.

His leadership, and that of senior managers and the college board, has been praised by HMIE inspectors, which stated in its report last year: “The college is led well and is enhancing the quality of its services for learners.”

Mr McGuire has led Cumbernauld to several major awards - it was the first organisation in North Lanarkshire to achieve the Investors in People Gold Award (2010).

Irene Morrison, chairman of Adam Smith College board of governors, said: “If you look at the HMIE results, it is obvious Martin has been extremely successful. I think it is a very good appointment and he will provide strong leadership in the creation of a new regional college for Fife.”
