New projects need new volunteers

LOTS of new volunteers are being sought in Kirkcaldy’s Gallatown and Sinclairtown areas to help out with new community projects.

(Link) Up the Gallatown, a new community initiative, is looking for members of the public to get involved in a number of activities in and around the east of Kirkcaldy, during the summer period and beyond.

Link Up is being delivered by Inspiring Scotland and Kirkcaldy YMCA, which aims to work with individuals and groups living in the area, to explore and develop community activities to bring people together.

Big Breakfast

So far it has started the Big Breakfast - a healthy eating and cooking on a budget project, working with Kirkcaldy YWCA, and is also about to launch a garden maintenance SOS scheme, which will give advice on everything from planting flowers, to maybe starting a small vegetable patch.

It is also about to re-launch the popular tool share scheme where residents could borrow garden equipment, which was run successfully by the area’s community wardens, up until last year.

The group also has a bike maintenance project in the pipeline, organised by some enthusiastic young volunteers.

The first edition of the Gallatown Gazette, a quarterly newsletter, will also be posted round the doors during the summer and Gallatown FM radio station is in the planning stages.

Family fun

The popular Gallatown Gala is also making a comeback this year on Saturday, August 11 in the Gallatown Park and every Monday and Friday for four weeks, starting on Monday, it is running a family fun morning at Pathhead Primary School.

Link Up is now looking for more volunteers to get involved as the projects rely on people from the community, no matter age or ability, getting involved.

Anybody with time to spare and/or a skill to share – whether from the area or with a vested interest in it – is urged to get in touch as soon as possible.

The group is also really keen to hear from local people who have ideas for any projects they’d like to see happening in their area.
