New refuse collection rolls into action in Fife

New bin collection times are set to arrive in Fife

A controversial new bin collection service has been rolled out in north east Fife in a bid to save Fife Council more than £800,000 a year.

From Monday, the Kingdom’s refuse collectors began working longer hours, meaning householders’ bins could be emptied anytime between 6am and 9pm.

Fife Council’s leader, Councillor Alex Rowley, joined the teams on the first day of the new collection arrangements.

He said: “I am pleased to be able to meet the teams today as they start on the new shift system.

“We recognise that refuse collectors make a huge contribution to public services, playing a part in everyone’s life, and we have worked with them to get to this conclusion.

“These new changes in the shift systems are about making our operations as efficient as possible, keeping people in jobs and maintaining a high level of service for Fifers.

“Households will receive the same number of bin collections as they do currently and businesses will continue to have their waste collected seven days a week.

“However, by making full use of our bin lorries we can cut down on the number of lorries we need, and save over £800,000 of public money while preserving jobs.”

The announcement of the new system prompted dismay among some workers earlier this year, but threatened strike action by some 200 members of the Unite union has not materialised.

Every household in Fife has now received an information leaflet about the changes, and a bin collection calendar explaining what the new bin collection day will be.

Householders are reminded to have their bins out by 6am and leave unemptied bins out until 9pm.

Anyone who has waited longer than two weeks between collections and has run out of space in their landfill bin can use the brown bin for all types of waste.
