IT’S the time of year when Kirkcaldy gets ready to rock with laughter as the annual comedy festival gets underway.

And now ‘Kirkcaldy’s Interactive Komedy Festival’ is bigger and longer than ever before with variety acts lining up alongside the usual traditional stand ups - and with kids shows there’s something on offer to suit all ages.

There’s an international feel to the festival this year too as some of the UK’s biggest names such as Nina Conti and Josie Long line-up alongside Germany’s Henning Wehn and Norwegian comedian Daniel Simonsen.

Big names

Also coming to Kirkcaldy is one of the best-known faces in the country, the force of nature that is Brian Blessed!

Organiser Bob Carruthers says getting Brian on board is a huge boon for the festival.

“Brian is one of the most naturally funny men I’ve ever met,” he said. “He’s a real loose cannon so anything could happen when he’s on!”

The festival runs from October 5-27 and for the last week a marquee will be erected in the Town Square, featuring some free entertainment. Bob says: “It’s a tough time wiith a recession on and we’ve worked hard to keep the prices down.

“We realise that stand-up isn’t for everyone so we’ve brought in some variety acts such as the Fife Follies taking place at Styx which will include burlesque dancers and cabaret.

“There’s an interactive comedy murder mystery at Annapurna Gurkha, a Sound Of Music sing-a-long at The New Club, and there’s a two hour kid’s disco at the Pancake Place.

Involved

“It’s also a real chance for local businesses to get involved.”

One of the sponsors of the festival is Blind Davy’s on the High Street, owner Davy Gurteen says the festival is a chance to bring the community together. “There can be too much negativity in the town sometimes,’’ he said.

Bob expects the festival to put a smile on the town’s face.

“It’s an exciting place to come too,” he said.
