New venues to explore at Doors Open Day

PEOPLE in north east Fife are to be given the chance to glimpse inside some of the area’s most historic buildings when the annual Doors Open Days event takes place next weekend.

Dookits, churches, old railway stations and even the sheriff court will throw open their doors for a few hours on Sunday, September 2, with a number of buildings taking part for the first time.

They include Balmerino Abbey, near Newport, where visitors can enjoy entertainment from local storyteller Sylvia Troon; St Mary’s Episcopal Church, a pretty Victorian building also in Newport, and Ladybank Station, which has recently been converted into an arts hub.

The Laing Museum in Newburgh will also be offering a rare glimpse of the private collections of local benefactor Alexander Laing.

In Cupar, the 700-year-old Cupar Old and St Michael of Tarvit Parish Church will be participating for the first time, as will the A-listed Masonic Lodge 19. In addition, guided walks will be on offer exploring the town’s amazing variety of church buildings.

Also opening its doors will be Cupar Heritage Centre, created from a former stationmaster’s house, along with Cupar Sheriff Court, where court officials will be on hand to explain court procedure.

Back by popular demand this year are guided tours and porridge-tasting sessions at the Scotts/Quaker Oats factory just outside Cupar, while other local buildings participating include 15th century Scotstarvit Tower; the Leng Chapel and Leng family house in Newport; Monimail Tower, and Collessie Church and Melville Tomb.
