News alert: new Scottish Police Service HQ welcomed by Fife politicians

Tulliallan has been named as the locatin for the new Scottish Police Service

News that the new Scottish Police Service is to be based at Tulliallan Police College, in Kincardine has been welcomed in Fife.

Following the announcement by Cabinet Secretary John Swinney on Wednesday 22 February, Cllr. George Kay, chair of the Police Fire and Safety Committee said he was delighted and proud that Fife has been chosen to house the police headquarters.

He said: “I very much welcome the announcement to start the Scottish Police Authority and the Scottish Police Service on the 1st April next year and particularly welcome the decision to base the headquarters in Tulliallan.

“Tulliallan is already recognised as one of the country’s landmark facilities in training our police officers, now it is being recognised by the Scottish Government as the place to locate both the Scottish Police Authority and the Scottish Police Service.

“This is excellent news for Fife as I’m sure this will attract a good deal of visitors who will in turn add substantially to the Fife economy. As the centre of Scottish policing we can expect an increased focus on Fife in the future, giving us the chance to improve Fife’s reputation further as being the best place to live, work, visit and invest.“

The news was also welcomed by Dunfermline MSP Bill Walker.

Mr Walker, whose Dunfermline constituency includes the Police College, said: “Tulliallan is the right choice: the facilities are already in place, which will save money and ensure a smooth transition in April, while ensuring an effective service that will be off to a running start.

“The fact that the interim HQ will be in Fife, rather than Glasgow or Edinburgh, is a reassuring commitment to the national nature of the new police force, which will serve the whole of Scotland. This move will also bring a modest jobs boost to the local economy.

“Eventually, the new force will decide on its permanent HQ. I hope it will remain in Tulliallan, and I will be lobbying for this.”
