Olympic Torch to pass through north east Fife

THE Olympic Torch will pass through north east Fife next year as it makes its way around the country in the build up to London 2012.
The torch will arrive in Newburgh on June 12 and be paraded to Dundee via Cupar, Dairsie, Guardbridge and Leuchars.
The following day it will be carried to St Andrews for what promises to be a memorable occasion when it arrives in the town where the iconic opening scenes from Chariots of Fire were filmed.
The tour will then head for Edinburgh, passing through Milnathort and Kinross.
North East Fife MP Sir Menzies Campbell, who competed in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and campaigned to bring the torch to St Andrews, said: “In only seven months we shall see the Olympic Torch in St Andrews.
“For sportsmen and women, and the public too, this will be a once in a lifetime experience.
“St Andrews is forever associated with the Olympic Games because of its backdrop to the opening scenes of Chariots of Fire.
“It is only right and proper that the symbol of the Olympics is brought to the sporting mecca of St Andrews.”
Fife Provost Frances Melville also welcomed the announcement.
“We can’t wait to welcome the Olympic Torch to Fife,” she said.
“Fife Council will be encouraging and supporting Fifers to organise their own ways to celebrate and share the Olympic spirit and will be getting in touch with communities and schools in the new year to find out about their plans.”
The Olympic Torch relay will last 70 days and cover 8000 miles as it makes its way around the country before being carried into the Olympic stadium to mark the beginning of the games on July 27.
Organisers are on the lookout for 8000 torchbearers with a story of personal achievement or have made a contribution to the local community.
They have also launched a ‘Local Leaders’ initiative to find people who can organise local celebrations when the torch passes through each community.
