Olympics build-up?

Filming on the West Sands.

Filming on the West Sands.

There was a lot of excitement and speculation in St Andrews earlier this week when a large film crew were spotted on the West Sands.

With Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth visiting St Monans on Saturday to film scenes for their new movie, it was understandable that rumours began to spread that the two academy award winners were in St Andrews on Tuesday.

Security guards on the beach remained tight-lipped about what was going on and the film set was too far out for any of the actors to be recognisable.

However a few “athletes” were spotted making their way down to the set from the trailers in the nearby car park.

RESEMBLANCE

Clad in the instantly recognisable running kit from the 1920s, they bore more than a passing resemblance to some of the actors who ran on the very same beach back in 1981 when Chariots of Fire was being filmed.

Details remain sketchy but it is believed Tuesday’s filming was of some sort of re- enactment of that famous opening scene and will feature on our TV screens in the build up to this summer’s London Olympics.
