One-way system approved on busy Kirkcaldy street

Cumbrae Terrace will be turned into a one way street.

kirkcaldy Area Commmittee has approved plans for a one-way system on a busy street following a two-year campaign by residents.

Traffic on Cumbrae Terrace will only be able to travel clockwise once the new scheme is put into place, news which one resident described as “superb”.

Tony Fimister, who has spearheaded the campaign to change the current set-up, said that traffic on the street had got even busier recently with the building of the mosque and the current roadworks at Chapel, so is delighted that the proposal was approved.

Long time

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said. “It’s almost two years since I approached Councillor Neil Crooks to tell him of the problems we were having.

“I’m really pleased that it’s finally going ahead. It makes sense from a safety point of view.”

Ian B. Smith from Fife Council’s transportation and environmental services said that they listened closely to the residents when planning the change to the system.

“It’s been an issue for a good few years,” he said. “In general the high parking demand resulted in difficulty for driving, with folk meeting each other head to head not knowing who should give way.

Options

“We did a letter drop in 2011 giving residents five options including one for ‘no change’.

There were two clear favourites; one was clockwise and the other anti-clockwise. We only had four votes between the two options so we took the decision to go back to residents again.

“The one that received most support was the one which we’d expect - as if it was a roundabout.”

The cost of implementing the new system is estimated at approximately £8800.
