Pensioner grassed off with park
Henry Guthrie who is complaining that the paths around Dunnikier House are overgrown and he has difficulty getting around them in his mobility scooter
A RETIRED railway worker is angry at the lack of action being taken to maintain pathways in Dunnikier Park, which are becoming hard for him to navigate on his mobility scooter.
Henry Guthrie, (71), can no longer get to the park as often as he would like to. He explained to the Press that he has been asking for the paths to be maintained for some time and has now got proof of his enquiries.
He said: “It was supposed to be cut twice a year but it was last cut about three-three and a half years ago. They just leave it when they do the rest of the park.
“It was braw at one time, but not now.
“You have got the nettles coming through and occasionally you get caught by a bramble.
“I have got to keep my eyes peeled.
“There’s a lot of paths but it’s a lack of maintaining them that’s the problem.
“The rest of the park gets maintained all the time.
“The council are aware of the problem. They just keep fobbing you off.
“So I got my brother to get a receipt when he went to the depo at the park to complain.
“They say it’s maintained but it’s not.
“They just keep telling me it’s going to get done.”
Mr Guthrie has been visiting Dunnikier Park for many years: “I go round the park three times a day with my dog, but it’s a struggle,” he said.
“I was doing it four times a day, but I had to cut back as it’s a strain on the motor getting through.
“I have had the mobility scooter the last eight years.
“I used to walk round the park all the time. I ran Smeaton Youth Club and I could walk the young ones off their feet.”
Scott Cleland, Area Parks Team Leader for Kirkcaldy, sympathised with Mr Guthrie, blaming the recent wet weather for the over-grown paths at Dunnikier Park.
He said: “It really just comes down to weather conditions. Our programme is backed up significantly as we are not getting to the priority areas we wanted to.
“We are looking to get someone in there in the next week, weather dependant. We appreciate Mr Guthrie’s patience with the matter.”
