Rabbit found in Leuchars

THE Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a rabbit was found dumped in a sealed cardboard box in Leuchars.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was called to rescue the abandoned female rabbit after a member of the public spotted the box sitting next to a wooded path near Henderson Terrace in the early hours of Saturday.

Inspector Sarah Gregory collected the fawn and white bunny and took her to the Scottish SPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre where she is now receiving the care and attention she needs. She has been named Dandelion.

Inspector Gregory said: “Dandelion is a very friendly girl in good condition, which suggests she has been a well cared for pet up until now.

“She was found in a deep fat fryer box which had been taped shut so she had no means of escape.

“Although there was some hay and food in the box, she would have perished eventually so it’s lucky she was found.

“We are beginning to see an increase in the number of unwanted rabbits coming into our care as the weather turns colder and the dark nights draw in.

“We believe this is because some people consider a rabbit to be a fair weather pet which becomes a burden to look after during the winter months.

“Hopefully we’ll find a loving new owner for Dandelion and someone who is willing to give her all the care and attention she needs for life.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
