Plan of action for Kirkcaldy’s green spaces

AN ACTION plan to develop and improve greenspaces in Kirkcaldy is being rolled out this year.
The second Kirkcaldy Area Greenspace Action Plan was discussed by councillors at yesterday’s (Wednesday) meeting of Kirkcaldy Area Committee.
The plan covers the use of vegetated land in and around the town covering parks and public greenspaces, play areas, allotments, woods, outdoor sports and floral improvements.
Fife Council has been working with local businesses as well as community groups in the town to enhance greenspace even further in Kirkcaldy.
Members heard the majority of projects named in the action plan have secured funding and some will be dependent on future funding being found.
In a report, which went before councillors, it noted a number of proposals for 2013. These included Growing Kirkcaldy submitting an application for Kirkcaldy town to be judged in the small cities category of Beautiful Scotland; a bid by Ravenscraig Park for the Green Flag award for parks, improvements to be carried out in Dunnikier Park, expanding the Edible and Tasty Spaces (EATS) project around the town, rolling out a programme of spring bulb planting and improving public greenspaces at Rabbit Braes, Gourlay Street, Pathhead Primary and Dysart War Memorial.
Members heard the work follows the good progress made as a result of last year’s action plan to improve the quality of greenspace in the Lang Toun.
As well as Kirkcaldy west scooping the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Trophy in Beautiful Scotland, other achievements noted included the setting up of a ‘Take A Pride in Kirkcaldy Area’ steering group; recognising the quality of the area’s beaches through the award of two Blue Flags at Burntisland and Kinghorn and Pettycur Bay, the growing of flowers and vegetables outside the Town House as part of the Edible and Tasty Spaces (EATS) scheme and the development of a masterplan for Dunnikier Park.
Councillor Kay Carrington said: “I think a dedicated officer for greenspace is a good idea. We want to look at greenspace in Kirkcaldy, I welcome this report.”
Councillor Judy Hamilton said she was pleased the ongoing work at Rabbit Braes had been recognised with children working on bird and bat boxes in the area. She also highlighted the EATS project.
Councillor Arthur Morrison added that local residents were supportive of the planned improvements.
