Plans for week of summer events
CUPAR Highland Games, which traditionally have been held on the first Sunday of July, are being moved to a new Saturday slot in June.
The move will have a number of benefits, the main one being that it will allow many more local youngsters to take part as they will not be on their holidays.
The games will take place on June 8 at Duffus Park - a week after Cupar Children’s Gala.
It is the hope of games organisers that a civic week of events can be staged by local organisations between the two big days.
Games chairman Alan Hendry said this week that the July date had always presented a problem, with many parents wanting to take their children away on holiday shortly after the schools broke up for the summer.
There had also been a clash with the televised men’s final at Wimbledon, which had an impact on visitor numbers at the games.
By moving the date, the games committee will also be assisted with various duties on the day by members of Cupar Air Training Corps. The cadets would have been at camp if the game’s date had not been changed.
Alan said that with the gala and games bookending the week, it would provide a perfect opportunity for groups to promote themselves.
“Civic weeks are held in other places, such as Ceres, where various activities take place in the run-up to the village highland games. “We won’t actually have time to organise any events ourselves as we’ll be busy setting up for our games, but it would be a great opportunity for local groups to become involved, promote themselves and perhaps raise some funds.
“I’ve spoken to the gala committee about it and they think the civic week is a great idea.”
The matter was aired at last week’s meeting of Cupar Community Council, with members supporting the principle of the civic week.
One of the possibilities discussed was a pipe band performing in either the Haugh Park bandstand or in the Crossgate.
