Plea for help in finding cannabis plantations
Police remove plants from a cannabis 'farm'.
FIFE Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for cannabis plantations.
The force is concerned about the dangers to surrounding householders from the operation of these cultivations as they often using illegal connections to electricity supplies and generate large amounts of heat, causing a substantial risk of fire.
Signs to look out for are:
•Blacked-out windows, occasionally with condensation on them or curtains/blinds which are permanently closed
•Premises which appear unoccupied most of the time, but which have visitors late at night or in the early hours of the morning
•Visitors to the premises may be seen carrying building supplies or gardening equipment
•A low level hum or a loud buzzing sound caused by extraction systems
•A strong, sweet distinctive smell.
•Unusual levels of heat coming through walls and floors.
Detecive Inspector David Wright said: “Fife Constabulary is committed to dealing robustly with the illegal drugs that plague our communities.
“We need the help of the people who make up the communities of Fife to play their part and contact us with any information they have, particularly if they suspect that a house or other building contains a cannabis plantation. This is not a victimless crime and the operation of these plantations can have a very serious impact on those people living nearby.
“While not all of these signs may be present, anyone who sees anything suspicious or anything out of the ordinary is asked to contact Fife Constabulary on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where all calls are treated anonymously.”
