Police aim to keep town safe during The Open
FIFE Police are preparing to welcome around 230,000 visitors to St Andrews when the 150th Open championship gets underway this summer.
To be able to deal with such numbers in a small town like St Andrews with limited transport links — while causing as little impact as possible to the local community — is always a big challenge and the R&A began their planning immediately after last years event.
Such planning also involves many agencies, such as the Scottish Ambulance Service, Fife Fire and Rescue, utility companies, many departments within Fife Council etc., but probably the most obvious to the public is the role that Fife Constabulary carries out in relation to traffic management and public order.
While the last few Opens have thrown up very few such issues, there is an acknowledgement that this only covers problems made known to the various agencies at the time and that there may be problems being experienced by individuals or businesses that could be avoided if only these problems were known.
As a result, this year Fife Constabulary will be publishing a Community Impact Assessment, which will cover many varied strands of the planning process such as traffic management, local businesses, taxi and bus operators, refuse collections, and health provision.
This will involve contacting agencies connected with these strands, such as the Merchants Association, Taxi Association etc but it is also necessary to engage with individuals directly affected such as farmers and local residents.
This Community Impact Assessment is being prepared by St Andrews and East Neuk Inspector Bruce Thomson who is very keen to have contact from anyone who feels that they will in anyway be affected by The Open and may wish to perhaps raise problems that they experienced in previous Opens or think that they may have in this Open.
