Police target unsafe drivers

Fife Police have expressed their disappointment and frustration at the results of an initiative aimed at cracking down on unsafe drivers.
A second weekend of action by officers targeting rural and country roads, as well as young drivers, saw 71 driving offences detected, including four speeding offences caught on the Fife Safety Camera Partnership.
Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, Fife Constabulary’s head of road policing, said:“This again is a very disappointing result, with so many offences being committed, despite the fact that this was the second such initiative within three weeks.
“It does show, however, the effectiveness of robust enforcement by the police. It sends a very strong message to drivers, particularly those in the high-risk 17-25 age group, that if they do drive inappropriately we will catch them.”
The project involved an increased policing presence with marked and unmarked vehicles and camera vehicles deployed in the north-east Fife area, which was obviously very effective in detecting those who drive inappropriately and place themselves and others in danger.
This presence co-incided with the peak of the heavy rainfall in the area and some of the resources were able to assist with the problems the weather caused.
One-third of the offences reported were committed by young drivers in the 17-25 years age group, and included speeding, seatbelt, documentary and illegal use of mobile phones offences.
During the weekend, there were three accidents in north-east Fife. Thankfully, no-one was injured.
As well as the offences in north-east Fife, a 21-year-old man was reported for anti-social speeding offences, despite only having held his driving licence for a month, while a 46-year-old man who had an alcohol reading of 147mgs, over four times the legal limit, was also caught.
