Quest to renovate Scout hall

A GROUP dedicated to building a confident future for young people is revitalising an old community asset.

Clubs for Young People (CYP) Fife, which has a high-profile presence in Levenmouth, has taken over the former Scout hall in Denbeath, in a lease arrangement with Denbeath Miners’ Welfare Institute.

The group hopes to use the Den Walk premises itself as a main office but also make it available, for “a nominal fee”, to a range of other community groups.

CYP is staging a family fun day at noon on Sunday, September 16 in support of the venture, at the park beside Denbeath Primary School.

Treasurer Dave Redpath said a number of attractions had been lined up, including emergency service displays, tombola, beat the goalie, sporting activities, and stalls featuring various local organisations.

CYP had done some temporary repairs to the building already but is hoping to raise around £50,000-£80,000 for more extensive renovations, including a new roof, heating and lighting, toilet access for the disabled, an upgraded kitchen, and more.

The hall could host a broad selection of activities and CYP hoped it could become a widely-used community facility once again.

Dance classes, fitness sessions, Zumba and netball were just some of the potential pursuits, suggested Mr Redpath.

CYP is chaired locally by Methil garage boss Paul Guyan and the group helps young people to fulfil their potential through opportunities for social and personal development.

A range of initiatives, including events, competitions and activities, includes support and positive role models to guide young people and towards becoming healthy, confident adults.
