‘Raining stones’ pair set for TV stardom

Fife’s famous meteorite man, Rob Elliot is confident that a visit to a historical ‘crash site’ as part of filming for a forthcoming TV documentary could result in an ‘out of this world’ discovery reports, NEIL HENDERSON.
He is convinced that a search of the Wold Cottage site 20 miles from Scarborough, wildly regarded as the ‘holy grail’ of meteorite sites could yield a significant find for the space rock specialist.
“It’ll be a pilgrimage to the site that in December 1795 gave us the understanding about meteorites we have today” explained Rob.
Rob has been joined by fellow meteorite expert and renowned collector, Gregory Wilson who has flown in from Hawaii especially to co-present the ‘road-trip’ styled programme.
Local TV company, Channel Fife are behind the project that hopes to combine the science of meteorite hunting with light-hearted historical re-enactment and a pinch of humour from the duo.
“And if we can pull something from the ground then that will be just fantastic.”
It was a chance that Gregory just couldn’t refuse, as he explained: “We both have a huge passion for meteorites and have spent many hours hunting for them together and having been good friends for about 15 years it just sounded like a whole lot of fun, so I said why not?”
Having already completed filming at two Scottish meteorite sites- locally at Leslie Reservoir and also in Angus, the pair will also visit the last known UK site close to Hambleton in North Yorkshire where Rob unearthed a substantial fragment back in 2005.
“The Hambleton site is in fact a secret location, that’s how serious we take it, but there is a big possibility of us finding something of note there, so that is very exciting, it’s a major meteorite site” explains Rob.
Rob, who is regarded as the UK’s biggest collector of meteorites and only full-time hunter of meteorites recently scored a major success when he offered £20,000 reward for pieces of a meteorite that was seen crashing to earth somewhere in the UK.
As a result of that, Rob managed to get his hand on one of only three known pieces of a meteorite that famously crash landed in Norway recently.
Discovery Channel UK has already shown considerable interest in the programme.
