Raw sewage spilling out hole in street

RESIDENTS in Templehall have reacted angrily over a hole in a pavement which has been throwing out human waste.

The damaged manhole, which is near Templehall Community Centre, has been lying open without a cover, with a barrier around it and some sandbags to stop any overflowing water.

But each time it has rained the blocked hole has flooded - and human excrement and used toilet paper has been left lying on the pavement.

One local said: “It has been lying open like this for about four weeks now. It is disgusting and clearly it is a health and safety issue.

“Children are having to walk through human waste to get to the library and the dentist.

“I’m sure there must be some danger of a spread of disease if it doesn’t get fixed.”

The responsibility for the area was passed from Fife Council to Scottish Water in July of last year.

Apology

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “Engineers were out on Tuesday night and cleared the choke and carried out a clean up of the affected area.

“A specialist winch was then used to lower an operative down into the chamber to recover the dislodged manhole cover which was replaced on Wednesday morning.

“We would like to apologise for the delay in carrying out this work and for any inconvenience caused.”

I'm surprised the headline doesn't actually use the most appropriate and obvious word in this case, ie "sh*thole"!
