St Andrews served up a taste of just how good food could be last weekend - and raised £10,000 as an important side order.

The St Andrews Fine Food Fayre lived up to its promise of being a big hitter on the Scottish food calendar by bringing together more than 50 independent producers and suppliers under one roof and attracting 1700 visitors to browse, sample, learn from expert demonstrations and leave with purchases to be savoured at leisure.

In just three years the event has gone from an informal gathering in the student union to this year’s branded and marketed show in the Younger Hall, with celebrity guests and a waiting list of businesses wanting to take part.

It also supported young food entrepreneurs and raising money for charity as part of St Andrews University’s RAG Week, because what many visitors might not have been aware of is that the organisers are a group of students, though students with a passion for good food.

Director and fourth-year student Victoria Albrecht, who took over in 2012, was delighted at the success of the event.

“Feedback from the suppliers and producers has been really good and everyone we spoke to who came said they had a great time,” Victoria said.

“It would be hard to pick out a single highlight because there was just so much to see but the cooking demonstrations in particular were a great success.

“I think everyone was a bit surprised by how many people came.”

With the Younger Hall already providing the biggest venue in the town, Victoria said they would be not want to go outside the town in order to go even bigger in future.

“We are doing something people want and the mixture of people who came shows how popular it is across the board, from students and university staff to local people in the town and to visitors.”
