Romantic Royals still drawn to East Neuk?
A CHANCE remark about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in a top celebrity magazine had Royal watchers across the world buzzing about Anstruther last week.
It is widely known that the Royal couple have had a real soft spot for Scotland since their university days in St Andrews, where they met and their romance blossomed.
During that time Prince William and his future wife Kate would make the most of the charms of north east Fife, and the East Neuk in particular.
But last week internet news sites were abuzz that, when their busy public schedules allowed, the Royal couple still liked to sneak in breaks at Balmoral and escape to Anstruther to recreate their early days together. What sparked the speculation, and the spotlight being turned on the East Neuk town, was a comment made by Blake singer Jules Knight, a close friend of the couple, who recently spoke about Kate and William’s courtship, telling OK! magazine: “They were always spending time together, going down to Anstruther to go banana boating or playing golf or going for a walk.”
It’s not known if the Duke and Duchess made a beeline for the Neuk when they were in Edinburgh recently for a ceremony in St Giles Cathedral to instal William as a Knight of the Thistle.
However, if they did, sadly they must have been incognito.
The Anstruther Fish Bar was a favourite eating place for the student Prince William, whose fish supper would be collected by a friend, but Robert Smith, of the world-famous fish and chip shop, said he had not heard that he had been in the town lately.
Although it was reported that they would head for Anstruther to go banana boating, this was an activity, along with water skiing, that was enjoyed at Elie.
Angus Meldrum, owner of Elie Watersports, confirmed that William, again in his student days, had been a regular customer, coming along with a group of friends, which may or may not have included Kate.
“He was given his privacy and left alone,” Angus said, “but as far as I know he hasn’t been back recently.”
