Rousing concert shows value of Old Kirk as a venue
kirkcaldy’s Old Kirk was packed to bursting on Friday night when well over 300 people braved appalling weather to attend the ‘Spring Overture’ concert.
Four local musical groups provided the evening’s entertainment in a packed programme designed to relaunch the building, saved by Kirkcaldy Old Kirk Trust for the town’s heritage.
The first performance of the night came from Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society conducted by Graeme Wilson, which got the event off to a rousing start with numbers including ‘Olympic Spirit’ and ‘Postcards from Scotland’ by John Gourlay.
Next came some delightful singing from Rosemary Nairne’s bel canto Voices, a group of enthusiastic youngsters who sang old Jacobean favourites like the ‘Skye Boat Song’ and ‘Will Ye No Come Back Again?’
After the interval a new group, formed in January 2011, The Langtoun Singers, held the floor.
Conducted by Ella Wilson, the ladies’ choir presented a wide and varied repertoire of songs including ‘Tears in Heaven’ and ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.’
The evening was rounded off in a celebratory fashion by the Dysart Colliery Silver Band, conducted by Bruce Fraser, a group which has been in existence for more than 130 years.
Over 140 people participated, and the audience clearly appreciated the talented and varied entertainment on offer. George Nairne compered the event, which aptly illustrated the Old Kirk’s adaptability for hosting such events.
Rosemary Potter, chairman of the Trust, said: “It was a wonderful event and hopefully the first of many.”
