Rowing challenge to help fight cancer

A WORMIT pensioner who survived prostate cancer is taking on a rowing challenge to help give others a fighting chance of beating the disease.
David Winch (72) was diagnosed with the condition last August and has since successfully undergone radiotherapy and hormone injection treatment.
Tomorrow (Saturday), he will be rowing 12 miles down the River Tay from Newburgh to Wormit to raise money to fund exercise classes for cancer patients and survivors.
David, who completed similar challenges after recovering from heart bypass surgery 10 years ago, said: “These challenges would not have been possible without the help and support of the cardiac rehabilitation run by the NHS and the University of Dundee’s Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE).
“Since early 2003 I have attended active living circuit classes at the ISE.

“This effort has taught me how regular exercise really does improve one’s sense of wellbeing as well as helping to preserve and even partly restore physical abilities.”
He went on: “Recent research by Dr Anna Campbell of the ISE has shown that cancer survivors benefit during and after treatment by taking regular exercise rather than resting as might have been recommended in the past.
“It has been shown that exercise significantly improves recovery and survival rates.”
David, who has set himself a fund-raising target of £1500, will be setting sail from Newburgh Sailing Club on Saturday, May 12, at 8.30am.
He expects to arrive at Wormit pier around 10.30am.
