A FORMER Adam Smith College student has hit the right notes to compose the music for the official Olympics videogame advert.

Ryan Smith, from Glenrothes, told The Press he was “thrilled” to have been offered the job as it represents his first major breakthrough as a music composer.

Ryan studied Music and Audio Technology at the College between 1999 and 2002 and graduated with an HND. The course taught him all about recording and music production and afterwards he went on to work at Q-Ten Studios in Glenrothes where he engineered, produced and mixed local bands for a number of years. He now manages the Studio, based in Glenrothes. He explained how he got the chance to compose for the official Olympics videogame trailer: “It was always my dream to be a composer so I started contacting music publishers with a view to signing with a company who specialise in this field.

“I eventually signed with London publisher Felt Music in October 2008. They specialise in music for tv, adverts and film with a worldwide client base. I got a phone call from Felt Music in March which sent me the trailer (for the Olympics videogame) and briefed me on the job. I spent a total of three days working on the project. I would send the footage back after each day, with the music and full orchestrations over it for the client to view.”

He continued: “Thankfully from early stages, they loved the track. They would give me little bits of feedback through my publisher which I would build upon, adjusting orchestrations until the job was complete. The deadlines were very tight, but it was an amazing experience.” I am thrilled to have composed the music for the trailer for the official Olympics video game. The trailer is being broadcast internationally and represents my first major breakthrough as a composer.” He added: “It is a very competitive industry, but I hope it will help open the door to new opportunities to further develop my career.”
