Far Eastern shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries is stoking speculation about its future in the offshore wind industry by confirming it is undertaking a business review.

The Korean company, a very prominent player at Fife Energy Park in Methil, where it has created a seven MW, 196-metre prototype test wind turbine, has comfirmed it is re-thinking its future in the European offshore wind sector.

It is not known how much, if at all, the revision may affect the firm’s operations locally, or if the Levenmouth project is related to the firm’s decision.

A spokesman said: “We are currently developing our business strategy and are considering our future within the European offshore wind sector.

“We will keep working to secure a high performance prototype and focus on developing new technology.

“We have made rapid progress so far and the immediate focus is on quality not quantity, as we remain in the early stages of the offshore wind industry.”

The company reportedly told another offshore industry publication that a review of business strategy was completely different to giving up the business.
