Scottish Youth Parliament beckons
Nicola Bruley Kirkland High School pupil from Methil elected on March 15 2013, aged 14, as Scottish Youth Parliament member for Kirkcaldy constituency
KIRKLAND High School pupil Nicola Bruley was successfully elected on Friday to the Scottish Youth Parliament.
The 14-year-old, from Methil, has thanked everyone who voted for her - making her the clear winner - and said she was honoured to have the opportunity.
Nicola, and 23-year-old Buckhaven student Loren Clark, were among the candidates in the Kirkcaldy constituency, which includes Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss villages.
It was still possible early this week that Loren may have a chance to work with Nicola, as a second-placed candidate was due to be declared yesterday (Tuesday).
Nicola told the Mail her first priority now would be to talk to local councillors in Levenmouth and discuss how she might enlist their help with her manifesto pledges.
Before the election, she told would-be voters she hoped to ensure views from the Methil, Buckhaven and Wemyss area were taken into account, alongside those from Kirkcaldy.
She aimed to campaign on behalf of young people to tackle child poverty and ensure young people had a voice in the development of the Curriculum for Excellence in education.
Nicola hoped to continue the work of her predecessor in the Youth Parliament to help 16 year-olds gain a vote in the forthcoming referendum on independence in 2014.
More details are available on her Facebook page, Nicola Bruley MSYP.
