Scrooge thief spoils the Christmas spirit

Byron Court

Byron Court

A SHELTERED housing complex has issued an appeal to kind-hearted locals after the contents of a prize hamper was stolen.

Staff at Byron Court, Methil, have written to businesses such as Sainsbury’s, Asda and B&Q to see if they can help replace some of the goods – but hope other traders and individuals in the area might want to help out as well.

The hamper, which was swiped last month, was to be used as the prize in a raffle to raise funds for the elderly tenants’ Christmas dinner.

Without the prize, the sheltered complex’s raffle will not be held and staff, at very short notice, will have to try to find money from another source in order to give the tenants of its 22 flats a Christmas party.

Kay Scarborough, a shelterered housing officer who has worked at Byron Court for nine years, said there had never been a problem in the past with the hamper.

She added: “One way or another we will get a dinner put on, but it’s pretty low. I mean, it’s elderly people that were to benefit.

“The hamper gets left in the foyer every year and tenants and their visitors normally put things in it as they come in and out, and then buy tickets.

“It’s normally quite slow to fill but, this year, it had filled quite quickly.”

Sadly, Ms Scarborough feels the theft may have long-term repercussions for some residents of Byron Court, which is monitored by CCTV.

She added: “We told the tenants and a lot of them were upset by it.

“They always feel secure in here but this makes them question the security of the building.”

Those who would like to make a donation to a new hamper are invited to take anything they can spare to Byron Court, situated just off Byron Street in Methil. Those doing so are asked to leave items with a member of staff and not in the reception area.

It’s understood staff at Sainsbury’s in Leven plan to make a donation in the near future.

•Fife Police confirmed a woman has been charged in connection with the theft.
