RAF Leuchars is finalising the flying display for this year’s airshow, ‘A Diamond Celebration’, to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee year.

The Royal Navy Historical Flight’s Hawker Sea Fury is the latest aircraft confirmed as flying over Fife on Saturday, September 15.

The Patrouille de France, however, who were to appear now are unable to make the date.

Airshow flying display director, Wing Commander Nick Stringer, said: “We have an incredibly strong line-up of RAF assets that are critical to our primary defence missions here in the UK and on operations in Afghanistan.

“With the RAF Leuchars-based Typhoon Display Team and the Red Arrows demonstrating their fast jet skills, the day will definitely be one to remember.

THRILLING

“Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Patrouille de France will be unable to join us on September 15.

“However, we have plenty of thrilling displays – with the Vampires from Norway likely to be a particular crowd-pleaser.

“The Sea Fury, which was the Fleet Air Arm’s leading single-seat fighter during the Korean War, is a welcome addition and ties in with our theme of celebrating the joint contribution of the armed forces during Her Majesty’s reign.”

The propeller-driven Hawker Sea Fury was developed during the Second World War and served with the Royal Navy throughout the 1950s.

As the Fleet Air Arm’s last piston-engined fighter to serve in front-line Squadrons it served with distinction in the Korean War.

The de Havilland Vampire was commissioned during the Second World War, but never saw combat during the war.

FRONTLINE

It served with frontline squadrons until 1955 and as a jet trainer until 1966.

Approximately 3000 Vampires were built in total with its design also developed into the naval Sea Vampire and the de Havilland Venom.

The three aircraft displaying are from the Norwegian Historic Flight who displayed in 2011 as a pair.
