Second open day for Anstruther hostel plan

The Murray Library

PLANS to transform Anstruther’s Murray Library were put on display again last week after interest of the historic building’s future grew within the town.

The Murray Library Trustees propose to convert the main front building into a budget holiday accommodation hostel for visitors, while plans are well established for the former snooker hall space to be converted into seven individual units for those working locally in creative industries.

Residents had been given the chance to view the proposals back in January but, despite an open day being publicised, only around 30 people turned up.

Since then, interest in the project has grown and a second public information session was held in the library last Monday, where a series of displays, including plans, models and information, was on show.

Key personnel, including trustees, councillors, the project architect, Fife Historic Buildings Trust and the preferred operator for the management of the hostel, were all on hand to answer questions.

A spokesperson for the Trustees told the Mail the event was well attended by plenty of local people, particularly those who voiced concerns, and that it gave the Trustees a good opportunity to straighten out some of the rumours which had been circulating in the town.

The spokesperson continued: “In recent years, the Trustees have endeavoured to meet the objectives of the trust deed by ensuring the building is used to further the education and recreation of the local community.

“These significant grants are never awarded without sustainable plans, which have now been fully developed.

“By finding a sustainable plan for both parts of the magnificent building, the Trustees aim to fulfil their trust deed and generate surplus funds for local educational and recreational purposes.

“This would allow the local community to continue to benefit from the Murray Library, as was the Founder’s intention in 1908.”
