Former international footballers Alan Rough and John Hartson and popular comedian Andy Cameron are among the guest speakers at the forthcoming annual charity dinner organised in aid of the East Neuk Wheelchair Appeal Fund.

This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the group’s fund raising activities spearheaded by Eleanor Bowman who, along with her husband, Sandy, and other family members, operated the Craw’s Nest Hotel in Anstruther for many years.

A highlight of the dinner will be the now traditional auction of sporting and other memorabilia.

Mrs Bowman, who was awarded the MBE in 2007 in recognition of her charity work and chairs the appeal fund, said:”A big thank you is due to all who have supported us over the years. Since 1989 we have raised over £450,000 and donated 111 powered and 32 manual wheelchairs, along with donations to various causes.”

The dinner, the charity’s principal fundraising event of the year, will be held on October 21 in the Symphony Craw’s Nest Hotel, Anstruther, starting at 7.30pm.

Last year’s event was a sellout success and raised over £21,000.

As usual, the calibre of the speakers is first-class and joining John Hartson, the former Celtic, Arsenal and Welsh internationalist, and Alan Rough, the ex-Scotland and Hibernian goalkeeper, is Adger Brown, the popular Variety Club entertainer, while television and radio star Andy Cameron will act as chairman.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the auction or the prize draw will be acknowledged on the evening and included in the programme, while monetary donations can be made through www.virginmoneygiving.com and the East Neuk Wheelchair Appeal Page using the ID 8011.

Mrs Bowman, whose daughter Edith, is the well-known radio DJ and television presenter, told the Citizen: ”Along with donations of many tens of thousands of pounds to various local and national causes our supporters have helped improve the quality of life for many people and we thank them all.”

Places can be reserved at the hotel by telephoning 01333 310691 or by contacting Mrs Bowman direct at 28 Fairhaven Crescent, Cellardyke KY10 3FE.
