The Whyte Melville Memorial Fountain

PLANS to restore an historic landmark in the heart of St Andrews town centre are continuing.

Behind the initiative is former Fife Councillor Bill Sangster, who during his time in office successfully got local backing to investigate the viability of having the Whyte Melville Memorial fountain refurbished and returned to full operation.

The monument in the centre of Market Street is annually filled with flowers, but was originally a working fountain having been erected in 1880 by public subscription in memory of novelist Major George Whyte Melville, Mount Melville and Strathkinness.

Mr Sangster said that funding of £18,500 has been secured and deposited in the St Andrews Common Good Fund to be used to refurbish the fountain and to add the necessary equipment to comply with Health and Safety standards.

He added:”Further work on the fountain, to make the bowls watertight etc. has to wait for warmer weather. A time control will allow automated operation.”

Discussions on the annual maintenance work on the fountain are still ongoing, but will be financed through the Common Good Fund.
