A STUDENT at St Andrews University has died suddenly while on holiday in Cyprus.
Twenty-two-year-old Jonathan Wookey, who was studying international relations and was also one of the university’s rising sports stars, died in hospital on Wednesday night after suffering serious head injuries in an accident.
Known to all as Jonny, he was with close friends when the tragedy occurred.
Paying tribute yesterday (Thursday), university principal Louise Richardson said: ‘‘Jonny’s friends and teachers knew him as an energetic and inspiring member of the St Andrews community.
‘‘A graduate of Upper College Canada and a native of Toronto, he was instrumental in the creation of both the Canadian Club at St Andrews - a society dedicated to fundraising to send young people to summer camp - and the newly-founded St Andrews ice hockey team, The Typhoons.
‘‘Jonny was with his friends when this tragic accident occurred and was, as always, enjoying the time shared with some of those closest to him. The St Andrews community has lost a dear friend and from the messages I have received from his friends, I know how much he will be missed. ‘‘
