St Andrews youngster Ewan Scott produced some impressive golf last week to finish runner-up in the Scottish Boys’ Championship.

He lost out in the final to Peebles player Craig Howie in the Paul Lawrie Foundation-sponsored event at the Murcar Links.

The St Andrean was two-up early in the final and won the opening hole in the afternoon round but then watched his opponent win seven of the next eight holes.

Magnanimous in defeat, the 16-year-old told the Citizen: “He was a tough opponent to beat and thoroughly deserved to win the way he played.

“I wish I had given him a better game, but there is still no shame in being one of the last two standing from a field of 256.

“I’ve got one more crack at this title at Monifieth next year, when it will be almost a home event for me.”

The Madras College pupil will still be eligible for next year’s European Boys’ Championship back at Murcar Links.

“I played in that last year and it was an awesome experienced,” he explained.

“Hopefully this week will help the players in that team next year have an advantage.

“I’ve got four exams coming up and I’m playing in the Battle Trophy at Crail this weekend but after that my next event will be the Scottish Youths at Ladybank in mid-May.

“I’ve got an exam on the first day of that but it’s only 20 minutes down the road for me and hopefully I’ll be able to get a late tee time.”
