Join in the Loony Dook 2013
FIFERS of all shapes and sizes are being invited to start the New Year with a splash for a very worthy cause.
The Langtoun Loony Dook 2013 is being held in memory of Matthew Rocks, the Burntisland teenager who died from leukaemia last month after a battle spanning almost a decade.
A large percentage of the money raised from the event will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which helps provide special wards for teenage cancer sufferers in hospitals around the UK, as well as funding research into cancer affecting teenagers and providing help and support to sufferers and their families.
Matthew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at 10 years old and passed away aged just 19 on September 16.
Tributes to the plucky teenager all described him as “always cheerful and smiling” and “an inspiration to others.”
With Matthew’s family’s blessing the next dook on Jaunuary 1, 2013 will be in memory of him, as well as others who have died from or are currently diagnosed with cancer.
Proceeds from the dook will go to the Trust to research new drugs and to support the many families living with cancer and give people hope for a cancer free future.
And previous Langtoun Loonies will be doing their bit – with newcomers invited to join in the fun.
This year’s event is being organised by Ann Belton who handed over the reins of the event last year but has decided to step back in to ensure the Loony Dook, which has been growing in stature since it began in 2007, continues.
Ann has already contacted most of the previous dookers and would like to hear from any others who would like to take part.
The event takes place at noon on January 1, setting off from the beach at the Basin car park on the west end of Kirkcaldy Esplanade.
As the dook will be in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust those taking part are being encouraged to wear white T-shirts, but Ann says she is quite happy if dookers want to wear fancy dress, as many have done in previous years.
“The story of Matthew and his tremendous courage really touched me and as our focus from the start has been the battle against cancer, the Teenage Cancer Trust seemed a very worthwhile cause for our next dook,” she said.
“I hope we will get lots of people joining in the fun as it is a great way to start off the New Year – and a great handover cure!”
