A date has been set for work to begin on the new Aldi Leven store.

Continuing to expand their presence in Fife, workmen will take to the site at Mountfleurie from next month, with a proposed completion date later this summer.

The new 990sqm (10,600 sq ft) store will be similar in size and style to Aldi’s store in nearby St. Andrews.

Aldi bosses have confirmed that the
£2 million development will be due to open in August or September this year.

Commenting on the work, Graham Nicolson, Aldi’s property director in Scotland, said: “We are very excited about coming to Leven.

“Although local shoppers may know our other stores in Fife, particularly the nearest one in Glenrothes, by late summer Leven will have its own brand new Aldi store offering award-winning low prices.”

Planning permission for an Aldi store in the area was originally granted in 2008, however, work was never started on the project.

Aldi submitted a fresh application last year, and news that work has finally begun has been welcomed by local councillor Alistair Hunter.

Cllr Hunter commented: “I’m delighted that Aldi have decided to get on and build its store in Leven.

“This latest investment in the town will bring further jobs, choice and revitalise a derelict area.

He added: “In addition to the retail facilities, the amendments I suggested at the planning stage will ensure a safe walking and bike route to school for residents and children on the south west of the site at Vettriano Vale, Turpie Road, and Castlefleurie that will allow them to avoid the busy A915 and pass safely behind the Jet Garage.”

The new store will be located just west of the Mountfleurie service station, opposite the Diageo bottling plant.

As well as car parking and landscaping, a new road layout will be put in place, supported by new footpaths and a new cycle route.

Aldi has continued to expand its brand in the Kingdom over recent years, with stores opening in Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, St Andrews and Dunfermline.

The new store in Leven in just one of five new Scottish stores that are due to open later this year.
