IT was a chance for youngsters to show off their ball skills and football talent as the Glenrothes Street Games came to the Kingdom Centre, reports, NEIL HENDERSON.

A temporary and fully portable sports cage, complete with 5-a-side football and hockey pitch proved a huge hit with Glenrothes kids after it was set up in Lyon Square.

The event which was promoted Glenrothes Detached Youth Work, in conjunction with Volunteer Scotland, Fife Council and the shopping centre certainly succeeded in getting kids from the town energised.

Kerry Wilson, the Detached Youth Work Coordinator explained to the Gazette the concept behind the Street Games Project, she said: “It’s a portable 15 by 10 metre sports pitch that’s fully enclosed within a safety cage that we can pretty much set up anywhere where there is a flat surface.

“The aim is to get youngsters involved in a range sporting activity and physical exercise and to generally promote sports within the community.”

The concept has been running for almost four years now and has already featured in a number of areas around Glenrothes and has proved popular where ever it has been set up.

Kerry continued: “It has the advantage of being able to be set up even at night as long as there is sufficient lighting but like most things, we are at the mercy of the weather.”

The indoor position in the Kingdom Centre meant there were no such weather worries as youngsters got to grips with the ample facilities vying to show the watching public who might be a future Wayne Rooney or Lionel Messi.

Anna Bluman, marketing manager for the Kingdom Centre was impressed by the mobile sports pitch and added: “We’ve had a history of sports events over the years and recently we had the beach put in the square in which we had a football team use for a training session, it’s a fantastic way to get youngsters involved.”

The project will be available several locations throughout the town this summer.
