The RAF Leuchars-based Typhoon Display Team have a storming programme of events coming up.

The exhilarating single aircraft display is set to wow the crowds at more than 20 air shows, festivals and Diamond Jubilee celebrations around the UK.

Coming entirely from 6 Squadron based at Leuchars, 2012 is the first year that the display will be mounted by a front-line squadron alongside their operational duties. For 6 Squadron that means providing Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) for the Northern UK.

The first Typhoon displays took place last weekend over Southend and Duxford.

The team will also be performing throughout the summer at major international events like the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford and the Farnborough International Air Show as well as being a star attraction at community events such as the Whitby Regatta and Carnival, Armed Forces Day at Cleethorpes, and the Largs Viking Festival.

Flight Lieutenant Glen Malaney, the team manager for 2012, told the Citizen: “The tteam have been working incredibly hard alongside their normal Quick Reaction Alert duties to get ready to mount a display that will demonstrate to the public just what a capable aircraft the UK has in the Typhoon.

“With the aircraft having proven itself as a multi-role combat aircraft on operations over Libya in 2011, and now playing a significant role in the RAF’s layered approach to air security for the Olympics, our programme of events has been planned with a view to allowing as many people as possible around the country to see - and hear - its power and performance capabilities.

“We have events as far afield as Plymouth, Sunderland, Blackpool, Folkestone and Northern Ireland.

‘‘However, with the team being based at RAF Leuchars, we are particularly looking forward to our last stop – a home display in Fife at the Diamond Jubilee Airshow here on September 15.”
