Anstruther residents have made a splendid effort on behalf of a vital charity, raising £544 to help cure blood cancer.

The East Neuk Centre Trust held a coffee morning to raise funds and also show people’s support for a local family.

Dad of two Duncan Gourlay is fighting leukaemia and needs a bone marrow transplant.

Fortunately for Duncan, donors have been found – four in the UK and 33 worldwide.

Tests are now under way to find the best match for him.

Duncan’s friends and family are now fundraising to support Anthony Nolan, the charity which searches for donors across the globe.

Centre manager, Susanne McElhinney said: “It was amazing to see so many people show their support for the Gourlay family.

“We wanted to raise awareness of the Anthony Nolan charity and the need for donors while fundraising. We have had fantastic community support and would like to extend our thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes and homebaking.”

Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer, such as leukaemia, by matching them to people willing to donate their bone marrow, or blood stem cells, for lifesaving transplants.
