Kirkcaldy people are being challenged to leave the car at home and improve their fitness while helping the environment.

May is the month for the return of the Kirkcaldy Challenge which is open to anyone living, working or studying in the Langtoun.

Make Your Move Kirkcaldy, a partnership between Fife Council and Sustrans, has announced the initiative which will be running for the whole month. It’s free to take part and all participants have to do is log all the journeys they make by walking, cycling or on public transport, with the chance to win some super prizes.

The Kirkcaldy Challenge will also be promoting a package of free activities for all the family, including: Dr Bike safety checks, guided bike rides, basic bike maintenance classes and information stands.

People can register on their own or as a team and there are different categories to suit all team sizes. As well as being part of a family team, youngsters can also take part in their own challenge.

Local businesses can register a team to compete against other companies in the town - the one with the highest participation will win advertising to showcase what they have achieved in the Challenge.

Businesses can contact the project team for bespoke activity packages to suit their employees.

During the month, there will also be a children’s Explorer Challenge and younger children will receive an Explorer Challenge card from their primary school. When they visit certain places in Kirkcaldy they’ll get the card stamped and once their card is filled and returned, youngsters will be entered into a prize draw.

All these journeys can also be logged for the family team.

Kirkcaldy area committee chairman Councillor Neil Crooks, said: “This is a fun way to get more active, feel healthier, save money on travel and win one a great prize!

“We’re encouraging people of all ages to register now and take part in this exciting challenge.”
