BUCKHAVEN is set to remember its history next year with the formation of two new heritage trails.
Work by environmental group CLEAR has been well under way since March last year, as part of the ‘Bringing Back Buckhaven’s Birthright’ project, and the heritage trails will be the final piece of its walk down memory lane.
CLEAR secretary Allen Armstrong said the project, which has been made possible thanks to a £32000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is looking to bring Buckhaven’s past back to view and instill a sense of “civic pride” among residents.
It’s hoped two trails, one focusing on industry and the other examining social history, can be created by March 2013, consisting of plaques and information boards set up around the town, describing ordinary life from 1945-1980.
Leaflets and guides about the trails will be available free from local shops, libraries and offices for locals and visitors alike.
“The idea came from discussion among CLEAR’s own members, who had visited other towns which had visible interpretation,” Mr Armstrong explained.
“There is the museum in Buckhaven, but that’s no use unless you have the key, and a ceramic mural, which is quite arty.
“There is nothing of the mines you can see; you can hardly make out where the harbour was, and there is the fishing village and old school, which has been levelled.”
The exact route of the trails hasn’t been decided yet, nor has a decision been made on the amount of plaques and panels that will be used, but it is expected both will begin from the ‘Bank Corner’, with one taking in lower Buckhaven and the other going through outer Buckhaven.
