Taking musical steps

Making music can be fun.

Making music can be fun.

A north east Fife mum is launching a new Musical Steps class for new babies in aid of Save the Children.

The class is for newborn babies up to the age of six months and their parents, and the class is so new, it still doesn’t have a name!

Cathy McCallum, a mum of two from St Andrews, founded Musical Steps more than 10 years ago, and has always wanted to provide something for new mums and dads and their newborn babies.

“I’m really excited to be launching the class this month,” she said.

“I’ve been working with babies and toddlers for many years, and I’ve always felt that newborn babies were missing out on the Musical Steps experience. Perhaps even more crucially, new parents have been missing out too.

“As a parent myself, I know exactly how wonderful, but also how stressful and sleep-deprived those first weeks and months can be. Playing music and singing is one of the best ways to soothe and calm babies (and parents!), and it helps with brain development, communication, parent-child bonding and lots more besides. We’ll eventually roll out this new class across the UK, but St Andrews babies and parents will be the first to benefit!”

Cathy would also like other children to benefit from this new Musical Steps experience, which is why she’s decided to donate all proceeds from these classes to Save the Children.

“Save the Children is a charity that is really close to my heart,” said Cathy. “Working, as I do, so closely with children, I want to do everything I can to help children who we can’t unfortunately reach with our music classes.”

In addition to all the proceeds from Cathy’s Musical Steps Newborn classes going to Save the Children, anyone can make a donation to Save the Children on Cathy’s JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/Cathy-McCallum.

Musical Steps has received many awards and nominations over the years, including ‘Most Outstanding Class Leaders’, ‘Netmums Favourite Gold Award’ and ‘Excellence in Primary and Early Years Music’.
