James Lyon (16), who held a fundraising ceilidh to raise money to take part in Project Trust in Uganda

A FUNDRAISING ceilidh held at The Bay in Kinghorn raised almost £2000 to help a Balwearie High School pupil take part in a challenging year out.

James Lyon, of Burntisland, is planning a voluntary year overseas in Uganda with the charity Project Trust.

James, a sixth year pupil at Balwearie, plans to take a year out before starting university, to teach maths and science to people in Uganda.

James said: “We expected to raise around £600 from the ceilidh, so you could imagine how pleased I was when I found we had raised £2000.

“I would like to thank everyone who put on their dancing shoes and came along, I really appreciate the support.”

James currently volunteers around eight hours a week helping S3 students with maths and engineering classes and also volunteers at a junior youth theatre in Burntisland and plans to draw on this experience while in Uganda.

As well as working in the school, James will be living with the community and plans to start a drama group for the local children to enjoy as well as organising numeracy classes for adults.

In order for James to take up this opportunity he needs to raise £5400.

He added: “Initially it seemed like such a daunting amount but the ceilidh has really helped and I have been putting away my wages from my Saturday job for the past year, so it is starting to mount up.”
