The mayor, the merrier
47 former Mayors at the Scottish Fisheries Museum, Anstruther
Anstruther Town Hall was the venue for a lunch to welcome 49 visitors from France.
The group, consisting of ex-mayors and community leaders, mainly from the region Pas-de-Calais, are on tour of Scotland and stopped off on route in Anstruther as they had previously visited through town twinning and school exchanges.
After a visit to the Scottish Fisheries Museum the French were piped along Shore Street and were treated to a lunch of local produce, all bought from shops within walking distance of the Town Hall itself. There was a huge selection of award winning bread from Barnett’s, freshly baked Adamson’s oatcakes, the three Anster cheeses, smoked mackerel from the Anstruther Fish Bar, locally grown strawberries and raspberries bought from Pathhead, and meat, fish and pavlovas from Le Petit Epicurie.
Local school children had grown red and green lettuce and baby leaves, and these were enjoyed by all.
The hall was decorated with French flags and red, white and blue flowers. The big round tables were laid out with floral centrepieces and food so everyone could help themselves.
Community leaders including Cllr Donald Macgregor and MSP Roderick Campbell, welcomed the group. There was also representation from Waid Academy and Anstruther Improvements Association.
Cllr Macgregor welcomed the group in French and by the end of the lunch, everyone appeared to have had a good time.
Gifts of Barnett’s shortbread were given to each member of the party.
Thanks have been extended to the trustees of the East Neuk Centre who, along with the organisers and the school rep’, washed hundreds of dishes. Thanks have also gone to the staff of the East Neuk Centre who organised their time to support this event. Particular mention goes to the manager and the caretaker who had to clear the hall in a very short time to prepare for the community cinema.
