THIS is an image of a model of the proposed redevelopment of the former Station Hotel in Kirkcaldy to create 30 retirement flats.

Property tycoon Robert Kilgour submitted the plans in November last year, replacing a previous proposal for a similar development of 40 flats on the site in the town’s Bennochy Road.

The former hotel, situated in a prime location near the town’s railway station and next to the Adam Smith Theatre, has been boarded up for several years.

Mr Kilgour originally bought and converted the property into one of a chain of nursing homes under the Four Seasons brand, which he sold in 1999.

After the nursing home was closed, Mr Kilgour bought back the building in 2007. Since then, various plans including a care home, flats, student accommodation and five-screen cinema have all failed to materialise.

When the latest application was submitted, Mr Kilgour warned if this plan was knocked back he would “give up on the building for good” and go for total demolition and replacement with new-build apartments.

He said: “If this scheme does not achieve fairly quick permission without difficult and costly conditions then it is really the end of the line for the building.”

It is hoped the Council will make a decision on the application with the next month or so.
