Tornado steams in

editorial image

A TORNADO stormed into north east Fife this week.

No. 60163, an A1 Pacific steam locomotive which moved under its own power for the first time in 2008, stopped at Leuchars Station on Tuesday evening on route from Inverness to Edinburgh hauling the ‘Cathedral Explorers’ tour .

The impressive locomotive crossed the Tay Railway Bridge and passed through Wormit before stopping at Leuchars to take on water and continuing on its way southwards.

Its origins go back to 1990 when a group of people came together to construct a brand new Peppercorn A1 Pacific and formed the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. The last of the renowned Peppercorn class ‘A1’ steam locomotives was scrapped in 1966. However, Tornado - fitted with additional water capacity and the latest railway safety electronics - is fully equipped for today’s main line railway.

The A1s were designed by Arthur H. Peppercorn, the last chief mechanical engineer of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), and were the last in a line of famous express passenger steam locomotives for the East Coast Main Line that included the Stirling Singles, the Ivatt Atlantics and the Gresley Pacifics.
