Totems set to add a splash colour to park

Organisers of the Take A Pride campaign and Beautiful Scotland 2012 have been delighted by the quality of ideas for a number of totems which will be erected in Riverside Park this autumn.
Judges were given a difficult task of selecting just six winning designs from over six hundred decorative ideas submitted by youngsters from primary schools throughout Glenrothes.
Artists will now recreate the designs, which incorporate the themes of the Olympics, the Titanic centenary and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the help of the competition winners themselves.
Pat Spence from Fife Council said the competition was aimed at heightening the profile of Riverside Park and also to give children the chance to have a say in just what they want in there.
She said: “The idea was to give children a direct involvement into how funding is spent and kids from schools throughout Glenrothes have had an influential role in the decision making process of what amenities are provided in the future.
“The totem designs is just another aspect of that idea and is giving kids a chance to add some of their own ideas into the park.”
Work will start on erecting the totems in September, with the six to be positioned in ‘strategically significant’ areas within the park grounds.
Glenrothes and Central Fife MP Lindsay Roy presented the winners with their awards.
He said: “The six ideas chosen are exceptional and I applaud the creativity and effort that each and every one of these youngsters has put into this competition.
“Riverside Park offers a fantastic and diverse space in which everyone in Glenrothes can be rightly proud.”
Stan Deprato a senior judge for Beautiful Scotland 2012 spent two days assessing the town and visiting the various projects involved this year.
He told the Gazette: “There are so many good things happening in Glenrothes this year, the effort and pride being put in to make their town stand out is very impressive indeed, the children’s designs are amongst the best I’ve seen.”
